When it comes to writing, I'm the dump-and-clean-up sort. I wrote the first draft of my novel with the goal of getting the words on the page and connecting them in a coherent way. I started with the beginning, but jumped around after that. I ending up writing the ending and having to make the two ends meet. Once the first draft was finished, I let it sit for a while before editing and revising. When I revise I delete parts that don't add anything and I expand places that read like a summery. I also like to read each chapter aloud to myself to hear how it flows. So, if you ever see me at a coffee shop talking to my laptop, don't think I'm crazy.

I feel like we have a really similar process, except it sounds like you've mastered the art of early rising! There is so much heart behind work that's done in the middle of life
ReplyDeleteI've gotten to the point where sometimes I wake up on my own. After that, coffee helps.
DeleteIt takes a lot of dedication write around "life", especially with a little one. I hope I find that dedication when my life get's more hectic (I'm going back to school to become a CNA).
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, Catherine, I'm working on my Masters in Special Ed right now, too. Forgot to mention that in the post. As a teacher summer is a better time for me to write.
DeleteI also with I could have large chunks of time to work on writing, but when you have a family that just doesn't tend to happen often. I really resonated with this piece.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to know I'm not alone. :)
